Maryam Mirzakhani, an Iranian Mathematician and Professor of Mathematics at Standford University is the first woman and in fact the first Iranian to be honored with the most prestigious award in the field of Mathematics, Fields Medal.
Profile Bio of Maryam Mirzakhani
Born in the month of May in 1977 in Tehran, Maryam Mirzakhani attended her high school in the city of Tehran. A talented girl from Childhood, she won a gold medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad in 1994 and thus became the first female Iranian student to achieve this wonderful feat. Continuing the bright works, in 1995 International Mathematical Olympiad, she became the first Iranian student to win two gold medals and even successfully achieved a perfect score.
Continuing the education from Sharif University of Technology, she obtained her degree of B. Sc. in Mathematics in 1999. Later, she moved to the United States of America, where she pursued her Ph. D from Harvard University in the year 2004. She came on to become a research fellow in 2004 of Clay Mathematics Institute and became a professor at Princeton University.
Her Contributions in the field of Mathematics
Maryam Mirzakhani has proved her iron by winning the most prestigious Fields Medal, and her works in understanding the symmetry of a curved surface is cited as one of the best works. She has also researched on several topics like hyperbolic geometry, Teichmüller theory, ergodic theory and symplectic geometry. She has made notable contributions in the field of moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces.
She is the one who discovered the formula expressing the volume of a moduli space and thus gave a new proof of the formula on the intersection numbers of tautological classes on moduli space.
The early works of Maryam Mirzakhani were focused on the closed geodesics on hyberbolic surface. In the recent contribution, she proved that complex geodesics and their closures in moduli space rather than irregular or fractal are in fact regular. In recognition of her excellent works, to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces, she won the prestigious Fields Medal in the year 2014.
In fact, Maryam Mirzakhani, since the teenage, came into the world of light and proved her caliber and immense sense of discovery in the field of mathematics. The field of geometry and dynamical systems made her more famed and while on her works, she bridged the gap in various other fields of mathematics.
